Emery Down Almhouses - Retaining Our Heritage
Over the last 140 years, the Emery Down Almshouses (also known as Boultbee Cottages) have provided homes for many local and needy residents. However, the cottages are no longer ‘fit for purpose’:- internally the accommodation is very cramped and the bathroom and kitchen facilities are severely sub-standard. None of the cottages is occupied at present. Generally in a poor state of repair, all five cottages are inadequately insulated and poorly ventilated which means that their preservation as Grade II listed buildings is in danger. The Trustees realise that time has moved on. To be viable and sustainable in the 21st century the cottages need to be sympathetically conserved and their footprint slightly extended to the rear.
The Trustees have been granted planning and listed buildings permission to undertake renovations. The plans retain the character and original features of these historic buildings and their setting but also offer up-to-date kitchen, bathroom and storage facilities so that modern-day occupants can live in safety and comfort. With the support of their project manager, Kathy Green, the Trustees have obtained a grant from the Homes’ and Communities’ Agency and a mortgage from The Charity Bank. The Trustees also hold a small reserve of funds. However, more money is needed to make the project truly viable and the Trustees are asking you, the local people and families for your help. We know that this may not be the best time to be seeking your kindness and generosity but any help will ensure the future of these cottages which would otherwise be lost to our community forever.
We are committed to the legacy of the Boultbee family and intend to ensure that the cottages continue to fulfil their valuable and necessary role. Work on the cottages started in March 2014. We ask for your support with our endeavour and promise to keep you informed of our progress.
• To provide affordable accommodation for local people
• To ensure the long term future status of these historically important Listed Buildings
• To contribute to the sustainability of Emery Down as a rural community
• To enable residents to live independently for as long as possible within their community and where their relatives and roots are located
You can help us by:
1. Making a one-off donation (cheques should be made payable to: ‘Emery Down Almshouses Appeal’)
2. Completing a standing order form
Both of these methods can be used by us as Gift Aid and we can claim 25p from the Government for every pound that you can give us. Please contact one of the Trustees listed below and ask them for the relevant forms. Any amount however small will help us to achieve our aim to retain this part of Emery Down's heritage.
Thank you for your help
